For the labs/model companies, deciding when to keep compute for themselves because a research idea has legs, versus renting it out (cashing in on the current compute demand), is 3D chess. Likely very consequential in the long run.
It gets more complicated considering the rental dollars you earn now can be used to fund future research.
But you also want the ability to redirect/redeploy that compute to your own research if current research shows signs of traction outweighing rent. Re “who will blink first”, @JordanNanos.
Earlier in the conversation, Dylan explained that by the end of the year, OpenAI and Anthropic will have more compute dedicated to research than Google.
@SemiAnalysis_, @dylan522p and Jordan with @latentspacepod, @swyx and @vibhusapra. Great conversation.
